The whole question as to whether a female Starbuck and a female Boomer
compel women to watch science fiction shows never bothered me much. I
never cared for any genre specifically. If a show's good, it's good, no? What I do
know is that I can distinguish between shows I watch for the guys and
shows I watch for the girls. And I guess that really says more about
who I consider interesting and attractive than anything else.
Shows I (re)watch for the guys in them - that I can think of right now - are:
- Buffy The Vampire Slayer: because Giles - my hero librarian - and Spike (ooh) still rock my world.
- Californication: for Hank Moody, yes
- Grey's Anatomy, cause I really dig Dr. Derek Shepherd
Shows I watch for the girls are
- Firefly: Zoe, Inara, Kaylee and River Tam ...
- Battlestar Galactica: Kara Thrace rulez!
- Lost: Kate
- The L word: Shane & Moira (well, she's not a girl innit?)
Now does that mean that the male BSG characters are uninteresting or
unattractive? Not at all. There's just not a single guy in there who
really blows me off my socks.
- Apollo (with or without towel) has heartthrob qualities, for sure. He is cute but way too complicated (BTW: I like Jamie better in UK English, which he usually speaks)
- I think Samuel Anders can be really sexy. Nicely beefcakey but a bit too much of a jock to my liking.
- I like Leoben for his looks. Can so see why Starbuck had erotic dreams of him.
- In all honesty: Tyrol would probably be the guy I would end up with.
- Or maybe even Helo...
None of them appeal continuously. Neither does Gaius Baltar, but he's a
tough case. He is at once pitiful, comical, despicable and endearing.
There's so much to say against our brilliant scientists character that
loving him the way Six does is hard to grasp. He actually
is
one of the most self-centered guys in the universe, but that does not
lessen the fact that he is - in so many ways - terribly attractive.
For starters: he's intelligent - and not just a bit! Mr Baltar is a
renowned scientist with an acquired taste for more mundane matters than
theoretical thinking. Back on Caprica he is well groomed, lives in a
fancy appartment and does not stay indoors to write formulas at night.
And he is funny. So many times I chuckled over the things he said or
did.
Shelly Godfrey: Have you lost your mind?
Baltar: I don't know, that's an interesting question, one I pose to myself on a regular basis.
He's a philanderer, that's true. Because he's good at it.
Once aboard Galactica he survives by doing everything ... well, to
survive. In which he succeeds, in the end. Moving me to tears ...(to my
surprise cause I did not like any of the deck eight stories)
I must admit too that I am biased towards Baltar because of his British accent. And James Callis has it. Really. I soo dig him in the Final David Eick Video Blogs.
